. >> and i'm stan stovall. thanks for joining us for 11 news today. >> meteorologist john collins has a check of our forecast. first of all, it's friday. everybody stepped up to the plate. very nice. >> absolutely. we're kind of torn weatherwise. the temperatures are great. i mean, a little breezy yesterday, but we need some rain. it's getting dry out there. so we're going to try to please both sides of the fence here. we'll continue with the very nice temperatures going into the weekend, but also, providing a chance for some rain. but nonetheless, it is a chance for some rain. so you can see on our h.d. doppler radar, no rain over us. but back in the tennessee and ohio river valleys, you do see some showers and thunderstorms. that's the leftovers from that little tropical storm that ran through texas and the plain states. eventually we do get a chance of some rain out of that system. but it will take a while, so we'll talk about it, a pretty good forecast coming up in just a minute. but now we want to see how the traffic's doing this morning. and here's kim dacey. >> good morning, ev

story just up the coast from us here in california. it was dinner time last night, about 6:15 in san bruno, california, the routine of a normal thursday in the neighborhood was shattered by an explosion so loud it was heard for miles. then came the geyser of flames shooting 300 feet in the air and then the noise. people near the blast zone understandably thought it was an earthquake, a nuclear explosion, perhaps a plane had gone down. turned out to be a natural gas line exploding and a fire that wasn't brought under control until just this afternoon. san bruno is a city of about 30,000 people, give or take, just south of san francisco, just west of that city's airport, sfo. federal investigators have converged on the neighborhood where the gas main blew up. we begin our broadcast tonight from the scene. our own kristen welker and miguel almaguer are there for us. good evening. >> reporter: good evening, brian. the blast has already been called a state of emergency. this city reeling from an explosion so powerful it claimed lives and forever charred the landscape here. as day brok

, i'm mindy basara. >> and i'm stan stovall. thanks for joining us for 11 news today. >> meteorologist john collins has a check of the forecast. looking good. >> yeah. you mentioned the fall-like weekend. i was out working in the yard past couple of days, very nice, and a lot of leaves in the lawn. but it's not because of fall-like temperatures, it's because of the dry conditions we've got. >> but let's talk about the cool for the moment. we'll address the wet in just a minute, or dry, or whichever way you want to look at it. at b.w.i. marshall right now, 56 degrees the temperature. that's the low there so far this morning. it just dropped into that range. 72%, the humidity. barometer has bumped up just a little bit, and we have a breeze to the west at 6. we'll still have a breeze tonight, not as breezy as yesterday. cool temperatures dominate the great lakes, new england, right down into the midatlantic region, all the warmer stuff is well to our south and southwest. so again today, very nice. now, we'll address the rain situation coming up in just a few minutes with

on the scene. miguel, what can you tell us? >> reporter: matt, good morning. at least 75 people were rushed to the hospital overnight, some of them injured critically. we know at least one person is dead, although that number may rise. some 53 homes were completely destroyed. more than 100 others damaged. it's believed the explosion may have been caused by a ruptured gas line. and as one witness said here, they described the scene as "hell on earth." the explosion ripped through san bruno just before 7:00 local time, the dinner hour in this suburb just south of san francisco. a blast so violent, some thought it was an earthquake, or worse, a jetliner crash. it was neither. >> i went out and seen this big fireball. first thing i thought was, oh, god, something went up, and it was intense with flames. >> reporter: a monster, gas-fed fireball with flames shooting as high as 100 feet into the air was burning so hot, it obscured everything around it. asphalt melted, windows shattered, the sky turned black and the sound, what witnesses describe as a roaring and a groaning, could be heard f

basara. thanks so much for joining us. let's get a check of weather and traffic on this friday morning. feels nice and cool out there. >> yesterday was nice, a little breezy, but nice. sun was out, temperatures were outstanding, and after the long, hot summer, it needed it. it was nice. the other thing is the dry, crveragey grass and everything else, the garden drying up. we could use a little rain. we have that in the forecast as well, some sunshine. now, what you see out there in illinois, kentucky, tennessee, that's not the rain that's in our forecast really. it's just the stuff that's closest to us right now. that's the remnants of the moisture from hermine, which produced a lot of problems in texas and the plains states and flooding. so that is not in our immediate future. sunshine is. details on that coming up in the forecast in just a second or two. but now we have some traffic issues. >> yeah, one is causing some problems, hopefully to be cleaned up before most of the rush starts. but right now, northbound 795 is shut down right at owings mills boulevard because of a crash ther
